Review of Dance Houston's Young and Intense Summer Camp Performance

Dance Houston's Young and Intense Performance on July 19th at Barnevelder Movement/Arts Complex was the culmination of two weeks of hard work by the students at Dance Houston's Summer Camp. The performers ranged in age from 12-16 and displayed an equally broad range of talented dancing. Performing Latin dance, modern dance, hip-hop, social dance, popping, jazz, stepping, ballet, and ethnic dance, the students executed a dizzying array of dance styles - all with avid energy and enthusiasm. The performers were divided in three groups: beginner, intermediate, and advanced level dancers. They performed most dances within these groups, and three dances in a mixture of these groups. In all, these budding artists learned and performed 17 dances (about 7 dances per dancer), which is an amazing amount of choreography to learn and master in only two weeks!

An outstanding piece of choreography in the show can undoubtedly be contributed to Andrea Cody, who is also the Dance Houston Executive Director. She put together a darling piece reminiscent of summer vacations at the lakeside. Complete with a beach ball and swimming costumes, these bathing beauties frolicked along to the big band swing music of Benny Goodman. The dancers clearly relished the cheery and lively nature of this piece.

Another stand-out piece was "Eeekkk", a hip-hop routine which featured 13 talented female dancers and one amazing young man, Josiah Ware. Josiah performed a break-out solo where he popped with incredible control, creating sharp angles and extreme contrasts between abrupt and fluid movements. He is most certainly a dancer to watch!

The summer performance was a wonderful example of how educational summer programs, such as Dance Houston's Young and Intense Program, can instill a sense of self-confidence and accomplishment in young people. It was clear from this concert that these blossoming dancers learned not only a vast array of technical, artistic, and performance skills, but also had fun doing so.

    Houston's Best Dance Crew
Midtown turned into a battleground this summer when a 4-week dance crew competition came to town. Battle Creed brought eight local crews to Deco to fight for their chance to win $2,000. Leading the ranks were Wyld Styl, Marvelous Motion, Planet Funk, and b-boys History. The styles changed from week to week, ranging from 80's night to freestyle. A panel of judges, led by Andrea Cody from Dance Houston, scored the dances based on choreography, style, and difficulty; while 35% of the points came from the audience's cheering.

At the finals on July 10th, Marvelous Motion and Wyld Styl appeared to be in the lead, but the points showed that it was anybody's game. In the end, Wyld Styl won out and took home the grand prize. They plan on investing their earnings in their dance studio, located in Bellaire. See them in action at Dance Houston this month.
