Dance Houston's last concert, the Winter Formal, was
one of our biggest successes to date. The performances
by Planet Funk and Fly Dancers were the most creative
hip hop pieces we've ever seen. Shawn Welling of Planet
Funk wove whimsical and acrobatic dancing into a
heartfelt story about the power of dance. Kathy Wood of
Fly Dancers challenged her young dancers to set their
signature style to a Stravinsky piece from a popular
contemporary ballet, Firebird. Both companies did
outstanding work on these demanding projects and
delighted the audience.
Wyld Styl jumped back onto the scene after a rebuilding
year with strong dancers, intricate popping
choreography, and a wholloping dose of humor. After
lighting up the stage with impressive synchronicity in
group popping sections, the audience could not stop
laughing when the boys in the male dancers busted out a
flirtatious dance to Whitney Houston's I Wanna Dance
with Somebody. We're still laughing just thinking
about it!
A promising debut was made by Ghost Crew, a raw
street-style troupe directed by Patrick Garret. This
former director at Planet Funk pulled together dedicated
dancers out of nowhere to launch a new kind of movement
for hip hop in Houston. Their passion and vigor will
surely take them far.
Adding variety to the mix, and you know we love
variety, were a feisty ballroom dance couple from
Barbara King's Dance Company, sharp tappers from Revolve
Dance Company, and a group of poppers from Marvelous
Motion. Lighting the pieces with machine-gun rapid fire
was Jeremy Choate, and Production Manager Janie Yao
waved a magical wand to make the whole production flow
smoothly.
We were excited to welcome a nearly sold-out house to
this event, including 100 kids from Project Row Houses
and U.S. Dream Academy Learning Center. Thank you for
your support and enthusiasm!
