Winter's Not Dead Premieres at Zilkha Hall |
 |
|
Psophonia Dance Company presents a brand new
concert, Winter’s Not Dead. Alongside audience
favorites from their repertory, Psophonia will
premiere dark new works that show their emotional
depth. Like a flower blooming through the snow,
Broken Off deals predominantly with one’s fight to
stay in existence while on the brink of submission. In
Turbulence, bodies crumble around a single
standing person, depicting the isolation of man.
Bent portrays dancers trapped by things unknown,
like birds in a glass cage. These are just a few of
the provocative concepts realized by Psophonia’s
Artistic Directors Sophia Torres and Sonia Noriega.
See them all onstage this month at Zilkha Hall.
Psophonia is generously giving away tickets to this
concert to "Movers and Shakers" subscribers. Simply
respond to this email stating your name and which
concert you'd like to attend (January 26 or 27). If
you're one of the first five subscribers to write
back, you'll win a ticket.

During his short tour in Houston, Xing Sang has
offered master classes for Houston Ballet Company and
the dance departments UofH, HCC, Rice, HSPVA. Karen
Stokes, Department of Dance at University of Houston,
said, “I'd like to strongly recommend this master

expert, his work crosses contemporary dance and ballet
as well.” This month's public master class is your

Powerful (un)Spoken Word in Amahl and the Night
Visitors |
 |
|
On December 15th and 16th at the Hobby Center for
Performing Arts, Sandra Organ Dance Company presented
a dance-filled interpretation of the 1951 televised
operetta Amahl and the Night Visitors. Houston
Ballet veteran soloist Sandra Organ led the company in
the recreation of James Sewell‘s innovative
choreography. The hour-long piece blends classical
ballet and American Sign Language to create a new form
of contemporary dance.
Inspired by nativity themes, familiar characters
like the three wise men theatrically dance through
each of the story’s scenes. The entire work is set to
the original musical recording that tells the story;
and each character signs his or her lines along with
the voices in the operetta. For example, Amahl’s
mother begins a phrase with a pristine arabesque then
places her fingertips together and inside her mouth to
sign “food” along with her character’s voice. The
result of this innovative choreographic endeavor is a
new kind of contemporary theater—one that combines
ballet, opera, and unspoken, signed word. Amahl’s
excellent dancing and endearing story make for a very
special holiday presentation.

Dance Houston Spreads Holiday Cheer at City Festival |

Kids in Houston never get to go ice skating outside
in a park, but with a little imagination and help from
Dance Houston, they did just that this holiday season.
At the City of Houston's Hermann Park Lights Festival,
Dance Houston led dances in which children of all ages
enjoyed winter holiday traditions like sledding, snow
skiing, and ice skating-- all through fun and
interactive dancing.
