Amahl and the Night Visitors |

Amahl and the Night Visitors, presented
by Sandra Organ Dance Company, returns this year to Hobby
Center's Zilkha Hall December 15th and 16th. Based on the
1951 televised operetta of the same name, this hour long
piece inspired by themes from the nativity features
classical ballet and American Sign Language, used together
to create a new form of contemporary dance. This dramatic
and powerful performance is a new way to celebrate the
holiday season.

You Say You Want a REvolution? |
 |
|
November 30th and December 1st, Revolve Dance Company
presented yet another beautifully choreographed work by
Amy Cain and Dawn Dippel, in collaboration with New York
based artist Wes Veldink and his company, Wes Veldink
Movement. REvolution featured polished
dancers from both companies performing pieces charged with
energy - a real celebration of life. There was nothing
dark about this work - just the bright brilliance of
moving bodies. It is easy to see why the two companies
have collaborated for three years, as a strong chemistry
is evident in their blended styles. The only
disappointment was that the show ended far too quickly,
and left us wanting more!

The Illumination Project: A Benefit Performance for
HIV/AIDS |
 |
|
For the sixth year in a row, HIV/AIDS supporters organized
their efforts into a single, united event drawing hundreds
to the Hobby Center on December 1st. This was not just
another dance concert, but a reminder of the HIV/AIDS
patients' and loved ones' struggle to survive. A
celebration of hope and remembrance, the event included
nine performances, including opera, theatre, symphony and
dance. All these amazing artists connected with the
audience in a way that is rare. With an unmistakable sense
of defiance all around, they seemed eager to chant, "We
will fight until there is a cure."
The evening concluded with a moving candlelighting
ceremony honoring those lost to HIV/AIDS as well as those
battling the disease. The evening's performances were made
even more powerful by this beautiful and cathartic moment.
