Dominic Walsh Dance Theater teams up with Mercury
Baroque once again to perform the romantic Romeo &
Juliet. This well-known work of Shakespeare's
continues to resonate with audiences young and old.
Today, three hundred years later, Dominic Walsh and
Antoine Plante bring the story to stage with over
thirty dancers, actors, musicians, and singers.
Baroque music, opera, and theater compliment the
exqusite dance technique displayed by Walsh's
first-rate dancers. Ty Parmenter and Felicia McBride
will dance the lead roles, while Paris and Friar
Laurence are played by actors, Adam Van Wagoner and
Jim Johnson respectively. Lord Capulet and the Nurse
roles will be sung by opera singers Gabriel Preisser
and Ana Treviño-Godfrey.
To add to all the excitement on stage, Fabio Toblini,
a native of Verona, Italy, highlights the performers
through his brilliant costume designs. Walsh says
"Fabio's work has that same organic quality that I use
in creating movement; he suggests a period of time
without being specific. His costumes are more like
clothes; very natural." The collaboration of all these
performers and artists is not to be missed! February
11 and 13, 2010 at 8:00 PM and a 2:00 PM matinee on
February 14th at the Wortham Theater Center's Cullen
Theater.

Triple Focus Review |
 |
|
Triple Focus waspresented at the Jewish Community
Center on Feb. 6th,2010. It was the collaboration of
three of Houston's dance companies: Houston
Metropolitan Dance Company, Urban Souls Dance Company
and Ad Deum Dance Company. The works featured
choreography from both resident and guest
choreographers. Though each company performed
contemporary movement, each one was very different
from the other in theme, inspiration, and style.
Urban Souls Dance Company's performance of "Behind
Every Great Man" was melodic, performed with a strong
sense of the beat. Choreographed by Dayton
Contemporary alumni, Trent Williams, USDC also
presented historically inspired choreography from
Harrison Guy. Altogether, the group focused on taking
contemporary dance to a theatrical level. Urban Souls
filled the house with energy through the dancers'
movements and soul.
Ad Deum Dance Company brought a more lyrical piece to
stage. This Christian based company showed the
audience where their inspiration came from: God. This
company showed talented dancers that were successful
at performing from both their mind and soul. Ad Deum
dancers were very graceful and seemed to almost flow
with their music, rather than dancing to it.
Houston Metropolitan Dance Company was gracefully
strong. Featuring a work by Pattie Obey, "Zoom", set
to classic jazz music, the company also premiered a
piece by Kate Skarspetowska titled "Consumed". The
Juliard grad created this piece around the idea that
society is 'consumed' in itself through day to day
routine. Their pieces were very well performed and
showed a strong sense of technique. The dancers were
graceful, yet strong as they moved across the stage
twirling and 'zooming'. Review by: Amy Tan
