Our programs focus on preparing elementary and middle school youth for high school or more advanced dance programs. Key activities include:

 

  • Weekly dance classes offered for 10-13 consecutive weeks offering a variety of dance styles ranging from classical to cultural dances

Workshops


Introduction to Social Dance: Salsa

  • Workshop / Residency | Grades K-12

Explore Latin culture through learning the fundamentals of salsa dancing.  While building confidence and social skills between boys and girls, salsa’s rhythm, style, and footwork offer a fun challenge for all ages.  A bilingual dance instructor demonstrates and teaches in a workshop format or in ongoing sessions that build into a zesty performance.

 

Bellas Danzas

  • Workshop / Residency | Grades K-12, Collegiate, and Dance Instructors

Learn the traditional movements of Ballet Folklorico, an embodiment of Mexican history and culture.  Ballet Folklorico develops the important life skills of grace, agility, and self-expression.  Bilingual instruction is led by Isidro Salas, certified choreographer from the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo Leon and the Instituto de Investigación y Difusión de La Danza Mexicana A.C.  Students of all ages are impassioned and challenged by Señor Salas’s celebration of classical Mexican ballet.

 

XXL: Larger-than-Life Hip Hop

  • Workshop / Residency | Grades K-12

American culture comes alive in hip hop dance moves.  Students learn coordination, timing, and performance skills while developing their confidence to dance to pop music of today.  Wholesome movements and song selections are tailored to any age group by a bilingual dance instructor.

 

America’s Best Jazz Class

  • Workshop / Residency | Grades K-12

From Broadway to MTV videos, this workshop offers students jazz dance in all forms!  Students learn coordination, stretching, performance skills, and the latest new moves.  Movement and music selection is age appropriate and each class is tailored to the level of the group.

 

Hep to the Jive

  • Workshop | Grades K-12, Collegiate, and Dance Instructors

Swing dancing is so much fun; students do not even know they are learning!  While jumping and jiving to the infections rhythms of Big Band Era jazz music, students receive age-appropriate lessons in history and science.  The Master Class is led by Andrea Cody, Dance Houston’s Founding Director, who trained extensively with the late Frankie Manning, the Father of Lindy Hop who won a Tony Award for his swing musical Black and Blue (1933) and choreographed the dance scene in Malcolm X (1992) starring Denzel Washington.  This master class opportunity brings cultural appreciation as well as challenging dance training customized to students at any skill level.  Male/Female partnering techniques are available but not required.  English/Spanish and English/Vietnamese lessons available upon request.

Danza Espectacular

  • Performance | Grades K-12, Collegiate, and Dance Instructors

This performance utilizes Ballet Folklorico to entertain and to educate students on the history of Mexico.  In Mexico, almost everyone understands life through folklore, the typical songs and music of Mexico that are passed down from generation to generation.  Bilingual performance host, Isidro Salas, speaks about the customs of several regions in Mexico, while dancers perform dynamic, traditional dances on stage.
